
PC Introduction (Windows XP/VISTA)
This course is prerequisite to all other courses.
This course provides students with a foundation in the basic knowledge and skills computer users rely upon. The course
provides two tracks for learning. The first includes the basic terms and concepts needed for continued use and understanding
of the computer. The second develops insight into word processing, the Internet, and what you need to know to be an educated
computer consumer.
Each class meets 7 times (sessions), 3 hours per session (21 hours total).
Each class holds six (6) students - one per computer.
What the course contains, by session:
Session 1
- How to turn the computer on and off.
- How to start and use the solitaire program.
- The terms used to describe a Window.
- The terms used to describe the desktop, taskbar, and menus.
- Basic mouse skills.
Session 2
- Introduction to Word processing using the Notepad program
- Learn to use all facets of the keyboard.
- How to Save and Open documents (files) stored on the hard drive.
- How to print from a program.
- Describe the basic parts of all windows.
Session 3
- Learn what word wrap means.
- Learn to select and size text fonts.
- Learn how to find and replace text.
- Learn the principles of Cut, Copy, and Paste.
- Learn what Headers and Footers are in word processing.
Session 4
- Learn about the Internet, and what happens when you use it.
- Learn how to send and receive Email messages.
- Learn how to sign into a dial-up Internet account.
- Learn the basis elements contained in all Email programs.
- Learn how to use Outlook Express for Email.
Session 5
- Learn what a URL is, and how to use it.
- Learn how to use a Web Browser (e.g. Microsoft's Internet Explorer)
- Use the Web Browser to surf the Web.
- Use the web page functions features contained in our Computers4Seniors.org web site.
- Learn the basics of Computer Security.
Session 6
- Learn the value for using the Windows Explorer.
- Use the Windows Explorer to view a hard drive's contents.
- Learn how to Search for documents stored on the hard drive.
- Learn the fundamental difference between files and folders.
- Learn how to cut, copy, paste, and delete files.
Session 7
- Learn how to setup and install (un-cable and cable)a PC.
- Learn why it's important to use a surge protector.
- Learn what it means to Backup and Restore information.
- Associate computer components with their computer names.
- Learn how to use computer ads when buying a computer.
